Feeding and Storing Molasses

Feeding Systems

Feeding Systems

The advantage of feeding molasses is that farmers can choose an application method to suit their feeding requirements. Molasses feeding systems can be custom made to allow in-shed feeding in any sized herringbone or rotary sheds with or without feed bins, feeding on exit races, in paddocks or feed pads.

Herringbone Sheds
  • Lickball in-shed feeding systems are made from strong 150mm PVC pipe fitted with floating lick balls
  • Each metre of pipe holds approx 20 litres of molasses, with lickballs placed at a comfortable distance for the cow to reach in front of each bale
Rotary Sheds
  • Rotary lickball systems adopt the same concept as a herringbone shed, but with the addition of PVC swivel bends
  • Rotary in-shed molasses feeding systems provide an incentive, encouraging cows onto the milking platform
  • Can also be added to trough systems in rotary sheds to provide a balanced diet with other feed supplements
Injection and Electronic Systems
  • Fully automated, totally controlled feeding systems that work well in both herringbone and rotary sheds providing accurate methods of feeding controlled doses of molasses
  • Easily incorporated to work in conjunction with existing in-shed meal feeding systems
  • Injection systems can be installed with both individual bins and continuous troughs
Feed Wagons
  • Molasses can be added to a mixer feed wagon allowing for accuracy and controlled feeding and works especially well with feed pads
  • For feed wagons that dont have mixing capabilities molasses can be poured on top of meal or added in layered intervals
Trough Systems
  • Trough systems can be installed either on the exit race or in-shed
  • In-shed troughs can be placed along all, or part of, the platform depending on shed size and design
  • Exit race trough systems can either be permanently plumbed, or a molasses tank can be used for storage, filling troughs when needed
  • To control molasses intakes, place a piece of untreated plywood cut with 60mm feeding holes, on top of the molasses
Trailers/Mobile Troughs
  • Great for mixing molasses with other feed such as palm kernel
  • Excellent systems to use when you have several herds and you want to feed them differently eg: springers vs dry cows
  • A suitable system for farms running smaller dairy herds or beef cattle
Lick Wheels
  • Available in 406mm and 558mm sizes
  • Easy to move and are able to be placed in paddocks or feed pads
  • Cows have to lick and work the wheel to obtain the molasses and this minimises the chances of gorging
  • A suitable system for farms running smaller dairy herds or beef cattle
