Feeding and Storing Molasses
Plumbing Up the Molasses Pump
We suggest that you put cam lock fittings at either port of the pump. This will make it easy to disconnect if something goes wrong with the pump or it needs servicing.
The ports on the pump are both 40mm, so the first thing to put on is the Hansen 40 x 50 reducing nipples. Use a very small amount of thread tape on the 40mm end, go easy on the thread, and don’t over tighten. Go up to 50mm because there will be less friction on the internal circumference of the outlet hose.

- Ideally the pump should be level with, or slightly lower than the tank.
- From the tanks 50mm ball valve, wind the Hansen straight male hosetail coupling into the black flex hose (can be any sort of flexible hose, 50mm). You may need to cook the hose for a couple of minutes in a kettle or use Vaseline.
- The other end of the Hansen hosetail winds into female thread of the male cam-lock fitting.
- The female cam-lock winds into the reducing nipple 40 x 50 and into the inlet port (side of the pump).
- Do exactly the same going out of the outlet at the top of the pump.
- Add the flexi hose at this end also (not supplied); either all the way to the filling point (if it’s a wagon or troughs etc), or a short way to the permanent plumbing into the cow shed.
- Use a 50mm PVC valve socket to join to the PVC permanent plumbing – use 50mm PN 12 PVC.
