Feeding and Storing Molasses

Storage Systems

molasses tanks

Agri-feeds recommend that only purpose built molasses tanks are installed. Molasses is 1.4 specific gravity which means that 1000 litres = 1.4 tonne (or 714 litres of molasses = 1 tonne). This weight puts serious strain on the tank, which is why our purpose built tanks have considerably more plastic in the walls (nearly twice) than non-specific tanks.

Recommended Tank Sizes
Tank size Number of cows
6-10 tonne up to 200
20 tonne 200+
30 tonne 300+
40 tonne 500+

There is a buying break if customers buy more than 15 tonne in one drop.

This is only a guide. There are occasions where farmers that milk 150 cows have a 30 tonne tank. This gives them the buying break and it gives them plenty of storage to cover them for any possible shortages of molasses.

Tank Location

The following requirements must be adhered to:

  • If the tank is not within the tanker loop and is situated elsewhere on the farm, it must be beside a well-metalled race, with enough area for the truck and trailer unit to turn around easily.
  • If the tank is more than 5m from the tanker loop (or easily accessible area) then the tank must be plumbed to the tanker loop – using a 3” (80mm) line.
  • The tank’s 3” (80mm) ball valve facing the truck as this will be the discharge point for the truck to fill.
  • If it is plumbed the truck must be presented with a 3” (80mm) male cam-lock fitting on the outside end to lock onto.

Gravity or Pump?
  • Most farms use a pump for method of delivery, however if a farmer is able to elevate the tank (retained bank only) then gravity feeding is an option.
  • If the tank has only one 3” (80mm) fitting, then this must face the truck for discharge – this size is also the best option for gravity delivery.
  • If you have a hose coming out of the ball valve then make sure you have a 3” male cam-lock hose-tail fitting on the end of the hose so the truck can lock onto this for filling.
